Looks at land issues in two different countries South Africa and the Republic of Kalmykia (found to the southeast of Moscow). The Steppes in Kalmykia used to be beautiful and lush, now there is little vegetation. Since the collapse of communism the collective farms here are deserted and only very few remain to herd sheep and cattle. Land is being slowly reclaimed by wind-blown sand and the earth remaining is saturated by salt. The newly elected governor is determined to address the land problems and drought resistant plants are being planted to stabilize the sandy ground. The people remain optimistic, teaching their children the dances and cultural heritage of the area, and how to properly manage the land, their inheritance for the future.
