As we move towards the 21st century, countries around the world are grappling with the same problems of pollution, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, and over consumption. Sustainable development is a phrase much talked of as a way out of these problems, but what does it mean? This Earth Report looks at the changes taking place in peoples’ lives across Latin America, as their governments make commitments to sustainable development. In Costa Rica, Bolivia and El Salvador we talk with a range of people – politicians, teachers, farmers, engineers – about the part they play in building a more sustainable society, and reversing the damage done by unregulated industry.
