Earth Report revisits the children it has been filming in nine countries since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. In Guangzhou, in China, great strides have been made in greening the city. Kay Kay’s parents work around the clock and she rarely sees them, but in material terms she wants for nothing. In South Africa, Earth Report has followed a white and a black child: Justin still lives a privileged life and is thriving in a new multi-racial society, but Visumzi’s wish is for clean water. For Visumzi’s mother, the end of apartheid has barely changed anything – life is still a matter of day-to-day survival. In Britain, Hailey’s father first lost his job when Britain’s policy of closing its coalmines began. He lost his next job when the firm he worked for went to Eastern Europe to tap cheaper labour. Hailey’s wish is that big trees should be lopped so they don’t fall on people’s houses!
