“As I was trying to stop it the house was blown away with me in it”. These are the words of a villager from the Philippines where typhoons strike up to 22 times every year, and with each day there are on average five earth tremors. Practice evacuation drills can make the difference between life and death when disaster comes. This Global Edition also reports on the floods in Bangladesh, where Jannat Begun has set up a sweet-making business to generate income when her fields disappear under-water. In Peru and Colombia thousands have been made homeless by earthquakes in the last ten years, and resettlement and re-building have become a fact of life for many communities. We report on projects that have adapted old building techniques to give greater flexibility and strength to peoples’ homes.
