In August 2002, around 100 heads of state and 8000 lobbyists, as well as 25 000 protestors, gathered in Johannesburg for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. The reason? A chance to get international agreement to put the world economy on a sustainable footing, to provide clean water, sanitation and housing without destroying the world’s natural resources, to deliver better governance, one declaration at a time. Earth Report was there to record their hopes and ambitions for the world’s largest ever UN conference. Two years later Earth Report returned to find out if those hopes and ambitions are any closer to being realised.
