This Global Edition marks the International Year of the Oceans. In Rio, unplanned development has taken a deadly toll on the surrounding waters. In the mangrove forests along the Ganges a war is being fought against the shrimp lords who turn forests into shrimp farms. We visit coral reefs around the world, and look at how tourists can be a force either to protect or destroy these precious marine environments. To combat the decline of the world’s fish stocks, WWF and Unilever have set up the Marine Stewardship Council, to harness consumer support for sustainable fishing.
