Tourism can boost a local economy, but what about the other effects on local culture, economic structure, and wildlife? Is there a way to balance the needs of local people, the environment, and tourists for the benefit of all? Hands On looks at responsible tourism that can benefit the local economy by treading lightly on some of the world’s most precious resources. We highlight several community ventures that are doing just that: an exclusive eco-tourism lodge built and managed by Maasai people in Kenya; the Sunseed organic gardens in Spain which provide an ethical holiday for willing volunteers; a new jungle experience lodge in southern Peru; building and using rafts on the rivers of Sweden; a dolphin safari project in Pakistan which is helping to conserve the endangered Indus river dolphin; a project to protect turtles and showcase the local culture in Honduras.
